Notably, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Villapol laboratory has focused on research aimed at helping COVID-19 patients. Specifically, the lab is studying the connection between changes in the microbiome and the severity of COVID-19.
Based on this work, we suggest that a person’s microbiome holds the answer to whether they’re likely to develop a more severe or moderate form of COVID-19 and if they are at high risk for suffering from long-haul COVID-19.
Further, we have recently published a systematic review and meta-analysis on this topic, which explores the more than 50 long-term effects of COVID-19. This review paper has been picked up by 78 news outlets (e.g., SciTechDaily, Rolling Stone, ABC News, MSN, Yahoo, and Psychology Today), tweeted about more than 11,000 times, and its publication was listed as a significant scientific work in 2021.
